Alamo Defenders Descendants Association files lawsuit over alleged free speech violation

Group suing Texas General Land Office, Alamo Trust

SAN ANTONIO – The Alamo is now the scene of another battle. This battle, however, involves a lawsuit over free speech.

The Alamo Defenders Descendants Association is suing the Alamo Trust and the Texas General Land Office, saying the group’s First Amendment rights were violated.

According to the lawsuit, the Alamo Defenders Descendants Association claims that it hasn't been able to hold its candlelight service in the Alamo chapel since George P. Bush became land commissioner.

The lawsuit also alleges that two of their members were removed from Alamo Plaza for wearing T-shirts that read "don't move the cenotaph," which is a point of contention in the Alamo Redevelopment Plan.

Alamo Trust responded to the lawsuit with the following statement:

"It is disappointing that the Alamo Defenders Descendant Association has decided to file this lawsuit. This is made even more disappointing by the fact that the Alamo did host the Alamo Defenders Descendants Association's annual ‘Remember the Defenders’ ceremony this year."
