Loved ones remember victim in West Side slaying

Angelo Polendo, 37, was shot in head on Oct. 11

SAN ANTONIO – Angelo Polendo's loved ones laid flowers on the stained pavement at the intersection of North Sabinas and Lombrano streets.

"This is where he was at, where they found him,” said Eliza Polendo, Angelo Polendo’s mother.

Police found Angelo Polendo, 37, in the intersection at around 11:40 p.m. on Oct. 11. He was pronounced dead at around 4:30 a.m. the next morning at University Hospital. He was killed by a gunshot wound to the head.

A Crime Stoppers news release said he was killed farther up Sabinas near W. Laurel Street. Several gunshots were heard before a gray-colored vehicle was leaving the area headed south on Sabinas Street.

As family and close friends gathered in the area, the significance of the location weighed on his mother.

"My heart is beating too fast. It's just beating too fast," Eliza Polendo said.

Holding the ashes of her slain son, Eliza Polendo said the flowers were meant to honor him.

"Just so he'll know that — or people around here — that he's being remembered," she said. "That's all we can leave is flowers."

Eliza Polendo remembers Angelo Polendo as a great person and a great son. She spoke with him the day he was shot. He told her he'd call her later, but that call never came.

"He was always trying to call me later," she said. “And I never talked to him until they called me from the hospital. And that was the last time."

Now that she has put her son to rest, Eliza Polendo is focused on the next step — justice.

Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest of whoever is responsible for killing Angelo Polendo. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 210-224-7867.
