SAN ANTONIO – A man who drove into a crowd of people while he was drunk and seriously injured two women was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison.

Juan Perez-Turrubiate, who was 23 at the time, crashed his vehicle into a group of people near North General McMullen Drive and West Commerce Street, District Attorney Nico LaHood said in a statement.

One woman was pinned between Perez-Turrubiate’s vehicle and another vehicle, severing her leg, LaHood said. Another woman was struck and then dragged underneath Perez-Turrubiate's vehicle.

Perez-Turrubiate attempted to flee, but was detained by the crowd before being arrested by San Antonio police. His blood alcohol level was 0.18, which is more than twice the legal limit, LaHood said.

During his sentencing, Judge Lorina Rummel ruled that Perez-Turrubiate will serve 10 years for failure to stop and render aid with serious bodily injury and five years on an additional count of failure to stop and render aid with bodily injury. The sentences will be carried out concurrently, or a the same time.

Rummel also ruled that Perez-Turrubiate’s vehicle was used as a deadly weapon, which means he must serve half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
