Man identified after leading troopers on high speed chase with child in car

Police found stolen gun, 'numerous types of narcotics' in vehicle

BEXAR COUNTY – A man was taken into custody on Christmas Day after he led troopers on a high-speed chase with his 12-year-old daughter in the car.

Guadalupe Cantu, 29, is now facing 10 charges.

Highway Patrol Sergeant Michael Cantu said troopers initially tried to stop the man for an invalid license plate, but the man sped away, leading authorities on a chase along I-35 South that reached speeds of 120 miles per hour.

Troopers followed the man and threw out spikes near Somerset Road. The spikes hit one of the front tires which caused the car to slow down.

The man got out of the car and ran from troopers but didn't get far before troopers deployed their stun guns. Authorities said the man continued to resist arrest even as they shocked him, but they managed to get him into custody.

Michael Cantu said the man's daughter was in the car during the pursuit. Troopers discovered a stolen gun and "numerous types of narcotics" in the car.

"Especially on Christmas day -- this is a day for families and relaxation -- it is what it is," Trooper Cantu said.

Michael Cantu said the man was seen throwing things out of the window during the pursuit.

Guadalupe Cantu faces felony possession of a weapon (first degree felony), two felony drug possession charges, evading arrest/detention vehicle (a third degree felony), endangering child (a state felony), tampering with evidence (a third degree felony), as well as four misdemeanors which include possession of marijuana, evade arrest or detention, resisting arrest and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
