When responding officers arrived at the Briggs Avenue home, Barrera and his father began to scuffle, police officials said in a statement released Friday morning.

The officers first attempted to use a stun gun to stop him, but that proved ineffective.

Moments later, he grabbed a butcher knife and charged at the officers, who shot him in the stomach, arm and lower body, San Antonio police Chief William McManus said Thursday afternoon.

Barrera was taken to University Hospital in critical condition. As of Friday morning, he was listed in stable condition and charged by proxy with aggravated assault-deadly weapon, and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

The officers have been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation. One of the officers has been on the force for four years and the other for nine.

According to Friday’s statement, a woman told investigators that before officers arrived at the home Thursday, Barrera was holding the knife in his hand as he assaulted her and then “put the knife to her body.”

Thursday’s incident was not the first time San Antonio police had been called to the home.

In fact, police have been called to the home 19 times in the past year.

McManus said the man has been emergency detained three times, which means his psychological condition has been evaluated.
