Man shot, killed in front of home on South Side identified

Michael Calderon, 22, died at SAMMC on Monday afternoon

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man shot and killed outside his home on the city's South Side Monday afternoon.

22-year-old Michael Calderon was shot just after 1 p.m. in the 100 block of West Vestal Place.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said up to three people got out of a Ford Focus and asked for the man by name before starting to beat him up. That's when, McManus said, Calderon pulled out a gun and started firing.

Officials said the suspects ran back to their car when one of them grabbed a gun and returned fire -- hitting Calderon twice in the upper torso.

Calderon was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center where he later died.

Chief McManus said one of the suspects was also hit and that the the shooting wasn't a random act of violence.

McManus said they are now looking for both the black Ford Focus as well as the suspects.
