Man suspected in shooting of trooper behind bars on $3M bail

EDINBURG, Texas - Authorities say a man suspected of shooting a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper as he investigated a vehicle collision in South Texas has been arrested after fleeing hours earlier.

Victor Alejandro Godinez, 24, was arrested early Sunday morning on three charges of attempted capital murder of a peace officer. He is behind bars in lieu of $3 million bail, authorities said.

DPS said Sunday morning that the trooper was out of surgery and was in stable but critical condition.

DPS officials say a preliminary investigation shows that at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday the trooper approached a vehicle crash in Edinburg where the driver fled on foot. The trooper was then shot after locating Godinez, who authorities believe was the driver, nearby. Godinez then fled again.

After the shooting, authorities asked the public to avoid the area, saying the suspect was believed to be nearby.
