Man who shot Bexar County deputy handed 65-year prison term

Sherman Robinson shot, wounded deputy Joseph Canales

SAN ANTONIO – As jurors began deliberations in the punishment phase of Sherman Robinson’s trial, the deputy he shot talked about the October 2015 encounter.

“I live it every day, said Deputy Joseph Canales, with the Bexar County Sheriff' Office. “It’s a night that I’ll never forget.”

Canales was among a group of deputies investigating a call for suspicious activity at an apartment complex in the 8000 block of Midcrown when seven shots rang out.

Canales was hit in the arm. His bulletproof vest saved him from death as a second shot hit him in the chest.

The deputy was in court during Robinson’s trial.

“Coming here, seeing the pictures again and listening to it, it’s almost like living a nightmare all over again,” he said.

Robinson testified that he felt that he was the victim of overzealous deputies.

“I’m a man,” he testified. “I got a right to defend myself.”

Canales’ father was a San Antonio police officer killed in the line of duty in 1972. That, Canales said, motivated him to pursue a career in law enforcement.

“I came to the Sheriff’s Office and I wanted to finish his watch,” Canales said.

Robinson was sentenced to 65 years in prison.
