Mayor Taylor's announcement getting reaction from present, former councilmen

Carlton Soules: She'll shake up the race

SAN ANTONIO – What had been rumored around City Hall for weeks became reality on Monday. Mayor Ivy Taylor announced that she will be a candidate for the office in this spring's city elections.

"I believe Ivy comes into this very strong and she'll definitely shake up the race," said former Councilman Carlton Soules.

Soules served with Taylor on City Council until this fall when he resigned to run for county judge.

"She is the only candidate that truly has been operating in a nonpartisan way," Soules said. "She's never run a partisan race, so she appeals to a broad range of constituents."

District 2 Councilman Alan Warrick replaced Taylor on City Council last summer when she was appointed mayor by her council colleagues after Mayor Julian Castro resigned to accept an appointment as Housing and Urban Development secretary.

Warrick said he feels as though Taylor has considerable support on the council.

"They feel that she has a pretty good chance, especially with the consensus-building decisions she's made since she's been in office," Warrick said.
