The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District made the announcement, adding that the person is off campus, and will not be back at school until he or she is deemed no longer infectious.

Metro Health and the district are working to identify anyone at the school who might have been exposed to TB. Letters will be sent to those who may have been potentially exposed, health officials said.

Page Middle School has already sent letters out to parents, inviting them to attend an informational presentation on TB, set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Parents or staff with clinical questions about TB should call the Metro Health TB Chest Clinic at 210-207-8823.

TB is an infection that typically affects the lungs. Information from the American Pulmonary Association states: “It is not easy to contract an infection of tuberculosis.” Usually, a person must have close contact with the infected person for a substantial length of time, Metro Health said in a news release. Casual and limited contact with a person with active TB is not enough for someone to pass it on to others. TB can be cured with medication.
