Metro Health WIC clinics offer healthy summer meals to children in need

Summer program extends to people ages 18 and younger

SAN ANTONIO – Need a meal for your children, but not sure where to turn? Now you’re in luck: The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s WIC Clinics are once again offering the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program at all 10 Metro Health WIC sites, officials said Monday.

The meals are available to children ages 18 and younger.

On average this summer, the 10 sites have provided 665 breakfasts and 600 lunches each week, officials said in a news release. The effort started as a national pilot program, but last summer, Metro Health was asked to expand to all 10 WIC clinics.

The goal is to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals, even when school is not in session.

“Food insecurity is a real issue in our community and we are proud to be offering this service at a time when children, on summer vacation from school, may have a tougher time accessing healthy, nutritious meals,” said Dr. Colleen Bridger, the director of Metro Health.

Historically, summer food programs have taken place at community centers, summer camps, school cafeterias or Parks and Recreation facilities.
