Retired Air Force officers honored for service

SAN ANTONIO – Two former U.S. Air Force officers were honored for their work Tuesday during a ceremony at Port San Antonio.

Retired Lt. Col Richard H. Weir and Lt. Col. Howard S. Bialas operated the historic B-58 bomber in the 1960s.

Their names have been added to the aircraft, one of the outdoor exhibits at Port San Antonio.

"I flew what they call second station,” Weir said. “Which was short for navigator bombinator so I did the navigation and the bombing."

Wier, 100, served in the Air Force for about 32 years.

During his time navigating the supersonic B-58 Hustler, Weir helped set a record for aircraft travel, with the plane hitting speeds of 1,522 mph.
