Morning rainfall triggers 2 sewer spills

SAN ANTONIO – Overnight rainfall triggered two sewer spills on Austin Highway and at Lackland Air Force Base on Saturday, according to the San Antonio Water System.

Officials with SAWS said early morning rainfall caused some flooding and, in turn, caused sewer spills.

One sewer spill was reported in the 1800 block of Austin Highway near Ira Lee Road and the other was reported on Chappie James Way at Lackland Air Force Base.

SAWS spokeswoman Anne Hayden said crews will clean up the sewer spill areas when floodwaters recede.

Hayden said no adverse impacts are expected since the spill was heavily diluted by stormwater.

SAWS officials plan on upgrading sewer lines across San Antonio, predominantly in areas prone to sewage spills. There is more than $170 million in budgeted improvements in 2018.
