Multimillion-dollar bond project ‘is life changing'

South Side drainage project will alleviate flooding

SAN ANTONIO – A construction project that will alleviate flooding on the city's South Side wrapped up Tuesday.

Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, other city leaders and stakeholders celebrated the end of construction for the Belford area drainage project. Improvements included the reconstruction of the entire stretch of Belford Road.

The area also got new sidewalks, curbs, driveway approaches, a widened drainage channel, retaining walls, an underground storm sewer system and inlets.

"This project is life changing because it changes the quality of the life of the area,” Viagran said. “Where before, the water would back up and flood people's homes -- it covered the street, the kids couldn't even walk to school. Now, we have water that flows properly."

The $8 million project was managed by Transportation and Capital Improvements for the city and funded by the 2012 bond project.
