A mural featuring a timeline of highlights spanning 100 years of aviation history in the Alamo City was unveiled Thursday morning at San Antonio International Airport.

While Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, is considered the birthplace of aviation, the mural proves that aviation grew up and matured in San Antonio.

The historical timeline highlights more than 20 significant historical events in civil and military aviation and commemorates San Antonio's rich and dynamic aviation history.

Among those participating in the unveiling was James Bynum, who was among a group of African-American military pilots called the original Tuskegee Airman, who fought in World War II.

Officials said the mural is part of a larger effort to bring more art, culture, music and history to the airport.
