Neighbors say crime has spiked in North Side community

KSAT crime-tracked apartment complex where shooting took place

SAN ANTONIO – A woman who moved to a North Side community to escape crime is feeling disappointed. She said crime has increased in the area. The latest incident is a shooting that happened at her apartment complex over the weekend.

The Avana Stone Canyon Apartments are located on Encino Commons just off Highway 281.

The resident, who has lived at the apartment complex for years, was afraid to reveal her identity but still wanted to voice her concerns about crime in the whole area.

"When I first moved here the gate was always closed. We had individual numbers. The lights were always lit. It was a good community base," she said.

The woman believes things have gone downhill.

"For the community board, they've reported break-ins for cars and an increase of vandalism," she said.

On Sunday afternoon, there was a type of crime she had never seen at the complex.

"It was about 2 (p.m.). It was a bright sunny day. Kids were playing outside, and all of the sudden, seven gunshots rang and it was scary," she said. She was outside at the time and was about to walk to her car.

Police have not released details but a call log released to KSAT confirms San Antonio police responded to a shooting on Sunday at the Avana Stone Canyon Apartments.

That log also showed that since Jan. 1, there have been police called to the complex for two vehicle thefts, one assault, one identity theft, two suspicious vehicles and other general disturbances.

Crime tracking a 2-mile radius around the complex from Jan. 1 to March 29 showed a total of 95 crimes in the selected region.

That data was then compared to the same radius and same time frame in 2011. The number of assaults and residential burglaries stayed about the same. However, there was a jump in aggravated assaults, commercial burglaries and a huge spike in car burglaries, spiking from 18 in 2011 to 50 in 2017.

Neighbors now want to work together to reverse this trend.

"Making sure that we all kind of watch out for each other," the resident said.

Residents said management just sent out a letter Wednesday afternoon telling them about Sunday's shooting and warned them to be cautious. KSAT spoke to a manager at the apartment complex, but he did not want to give a statement about the incident or other crimes in the area.
