NEISD teachers surprised with grant money for special projects

SAN ANTONIO – North East ISD teachers were surprised at their schools Wednesday to learn they are getting thousands of dollars in grant money to help better educate their students.

The North East Educational Foundation (NEEF) donated more than $300,000 to teachers special innovation projects across the district.

Teachers at Northern Hills, Northwood and Oak Grove elementary schools were given surprise grant money presentations Wednesday morning.

One of the those teachers, Ginger Cunningham, teaches kindergarten to second graders with special needs. She plans on using her department's $5,000 grant to build a sensory classroom for her behavioral needs students.

"To the individuals that stepped out to make this happen for us.... Our needs are super-great here," Cunningham said. "There (are) honestly, no words, thank you isn't enough."

NEISD teachers applied for the grants over a year ago. They had no clue if they would be granted the money or not. As for Cunningham she says she had completely forgotten about applying for the grant and was overwhelmed by the surprise.

NEEF is a private, nonprofit charitable corporation that works to raise money to expand educational opportunities for the students of North East ISD. To learn more about the nonprofit or how to donate check out their website: www.northeastfoundation.org
