New helipad helps serve more patients at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital

Spurs coyote joins in on ribbon-cutting ceremony

SAN ANTONIO – Metropolitan Methodist Hospital has added a new helipad to help get patients the care they need.

The San Antonio Spurs coyote joined hospital officials Monday for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Previously, patients who had to be airlifted for treatment would have to land at another downtown hospital and be put in an ambulance and taken to Metropolitan. With the new helipad, hospital officials said it can better serve patients from rural areas and also respond more effectively to time-sensitive medical emergencies.

"It's also a testament as to what's happening here in our downtown area," Metropolitan Methodist Hospital CEO Greg Seiler said. "You look around and see all the growth -- we're right in the middle of it."

Seiler said the hospital sees about 200 patients a month from outside Bexar County. Not all of them are flown in, but the new helipad expands its ability to take in more patients.
