New vending machine offers healthy choices

Proceeds also fight childhood obesity

SAN ANTONIO – There are a few things that you can usually count on to be unhealthy -- cigarette smoking, for instance. Another? Most anything coming out of a vending machine.

But new to San Antonio is a type of machine that is rolling out good heath and education at a cheaper price.

Sure it's a bag of potato chips, but coming out of the H.U.M.A.N. vending machine, it's still healthier than any bag of Doritos.

It's a new concept for a quick food fix.

San Antonio franchisee Ruben Ayala says the machine has a video screen that displays the nutritional advantages of the products inside -- all chosen by a group of specially selected nutritionists and doctors.

The machine is getting a workout at the Thousand Oaks YMCA by members.

"Now that I'm in college, I am trying to keep up with that, work out and not gain the freshman 15 like some of the other people have gained already that I know," said Jarrod Gaddis. "The machine's helping me do that a lot."

"Our members are here to exercise and get healthy and they would like to see the same in the food and we like not to tempt them with candy bars on the way out of the facilities," said YMCA District Vice President Phillip Ott.

Part of plan is to offer these products at a reduced price, with 10 percent of the profits going to local charities to fight childhood obesity.

Five H.U.M.A.N. vending machines are now in place in San Antonio. Aside from YMCA locations, there are a couple inside the Grand Hyatt Hotel as well.
