Officers break window to alert, rescue tenants from apartment fire

SAN ANTONIO – Tenants and their pets escaped an apartment fire without injury on Saturday morning, thanks, in part, to swift action from San Antonio Police Department officers.

Firefighters were called to The Crossing at 1415 at 1415 Babcock Road just before 10 a.m. Saturday for reports of heavy flames coming from the apartment.

San Antonio Fire Department spokesperson Woody Woodward said the fire started on the first floor and spread to a nearby unit.

Woodward said an SAPD officer broke a window to alert tenants to the blaze and got them out of the apartment before flames spread.

All tenants and their pets are accounted for with the exception of a cat that ran off during the fire.

Firefighters suspect the fire was electrical, but called arson out to investigate further.

Woodward said firefighters knocked the fire down quickly. Investigators are currently surveying damages to the building and are working with displaced tenants.

Woodward did not say how many units were affected or how many residents were displaced.
