Man charged after woman is shot in neck during altercation

Jose Villalobos, 45, was taken into police custody

SAN ANTONIO – A local man has been arrested, accused of shooting a woman in the neck during an altercation on the  city's East Side early Friday morning.

Jose Villalobos, 45, has been taken into police custody.

According to police, officers responded to a call for a shooting around 6 a.m. at a gas station in the 1900 block of South New Braunfels Avenue and found the victim, a woman, shot in the neck.

Police said the victim had been driven to the gas station after getting into a fight with Villalobos at a home on H Street. Authorities say the pair have an on-again, off-again relationship and were fighting when she called a friend to pick her up.

Jennifer Rodriguez, public information officer with the San Antonio Police Department, said a struggle ensued between Villalobos and the victim and a gun went off, wounding the victim in the neck.

Rodriguez said the victim was driven to the gas station where emergency crews responded. She was taken to an area hospital where, at last check, she was listed in critical condition. Her name and age were not released.

Police said Villalobos was apprehended not far from the scene a short time later. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police said a weapon was located by officers. Investigators are confident it was the weapon used, but testing, however, is still necessary, Rodriguez said.

Villalobos is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
