Ortiz cruises to victory in sheriff's race

SAN ANTONIO – Incumbent Amadeo Ortiz scored an easy victory over Andy Lopez for the Democratic nomination for Bexar County Sheriff.

With 100 percent of the vote counted, Ortiz received 13,931 votes, or 63 percent of the vote compared to 8,023 votes, or 37 percent of the vote for Lopez.

Ortiz said he an unexpectedly high voter turnout helped him win.

"I was surprised on the amount of people that came out to vote," Ortiz said at his victory party.

Lopez said despite the loss, he wouldn't change his strategy.

"He and I both ran a good, clean campaign, and I wouldn't have done anything different," Lopez said. "We went out there and walked and talked to the people and whatever happens happens, I accept it."

Ortiz will face Republican Susan Pamerleau in the November election.
