SAN ANTONIO – Over the next several months, the San Antonio Museum of Art will be featuring the theme "Lovestruck," with exhibits, classes, and all types of events aimed to put a little passion into your day.
One of those exhibits comes in the form of the goddess Aphrodite, who is sharing her history and beauty with San Antonio.
"It's phenomenal. People cannot believe how interesting it is and how exciting it is," said Katie Luber, director at SAMA. "Really, Aphrodite has so much meaning to all of our visitors now, and who doesn't fall in love with the Goddess of love?"
The exhibit, titled "Aphrodite and the Gods of Love," is on display from now until Feb. 17 at SAMA, with pieces coming from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, Italy.
The collection was most recently on display at the Getty Villa in California.
The exhibit, which opened on Sept. 15, already has San Antonians buzzing with excitement.
"I think they're all beautiful," said Joan Powers, who was visiting the exhibit on Tuesday. "Makes me want to take one of them home, but I don't think they'd let me. They're lovely."
Jessica Powers, curator of art of the Ancient Mediterranean World, said she hopes patrons learn something about the Goddess Aphrodite in this rare opportunity to see it firsthand.
"Today we think of Aphrodite as the goddess of love and beauty, and what the exhibition shows is that she was actually a lot more complicated than that," Powers said. "So there's lots of reasons to come by while the exhibit is here. It's a wonderful opportunity for our community."
The exhibit is free with general admission to the museum, which is $10. Admission is waived on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays between 10 a.m. and noon.
