SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police have released the name of the man arrested on suspicion of stealing a San Antonio Fire Department vehicle Thursday morning and going on a wild, destructive joyride downtown.
Ruben Cuellar, 26, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft, and evading arrest.
According to San Antonio police, a paramedic crew had left their F-150 pickup truck running around 8 a.m. while they treated a patient inside a business near the corner of North St. Mary's and Houston street. That's when, police say, Cuellar climbed into the driver's seat and drove off.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus in press conference Thursday said Cuellar drove around the block before returning and was confronted by two EMS personnel but did not stop.
Police said Cuellar then drove through the area, hitting several other vehicles before driving the stolen truck for miles, going through south of downtown and then onto Interstate 35 north.
The chase ended on the far Northeast Side after Cuellar sideswiped an 18-wheeler near The Forum shopping center, police said.
McManus said Cuellar resisted arrest but was eventually taken into police custody.
