Police: Man shoots father after he tries to break into his East Side home

Shooting was reported around 3:30 a.m. in 1500 block of Montana St

SAN ANTONIO – A 50-year-old man is recovering at an area hospital after he was shot in the leg by his son, San Antonio police said Wednesday.

The shooting was reported just before 3:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of Montana Street, located not far from South New Braunfels Avenue.

According to police the 21-year-old man said he shot his father with a shotgun in self-defense after he threatened to break into the home through the back door.

The shooter told police that his father has mental issues and has not been taking his medication.

The father was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center for his injures. The do not appear to be life-threatening.

Police said they are now investigating the claims of self defense. It is unclear if any charges will be filed.
