Police hope to talk with survivor of fatal NE Side shooting

Felipe Lopez, 22, in critical condition; sister killed

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police hope to talk to a 22-year-old man who was critically wounded Monday night in a fatal shooting at his Northeast Side home.

Police want to learn more from the victim, Felipe Lopez, about the people who shot him and Joyce Medina, 27, who died of gunshot wounds. Officers at the scene said the victims were brother and sister.

According to police spokesman Officer Douglas Greene, the siblings were gunned down around 11 p.m. after they answered a knock at the door of their home in the 4300 block of Sun Vista Lane.

"Two individuals, male individuals, went up to the front door, knocked on the door and once the victims answered the door, that's when they started firing rounds," Greene said. "We're hoping that with the male victim, that we get a little more information from him once he's in the position, after he's treated for his injuries."

Greene said a witness told investigators that the shooters escaped in a red Dodge pickup, and that there was a third person with them.

"One of the males was the getaway driver, and you have the two male shooters that approached the house," Greene said.

Paper evidence markers highlighted bullet holes in the front door of the home on On Tuesday morning. Greene said detectives are trying to determine if the victims might have been trying to shut the door when the shots were fired, or if they were shot without ever having the chance to open the door.

The home appeared to have surveillance cameras on the roof, but it's unclear whether they were operating at the time of the shooting.

"That's definitely something we'll have our technical investigations team look into," Greene said. "These are detectives that specifically look into surveillance footage."

Police asked anyone who might know who is responsible for the shootings to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867).
