Politicians' responses to Castro confirmation

SAN ANTONIO – Within moments of the announcement of Julian Castro's confirmation as HUD secretary, statements of support for the former San Antonio mayor began pouring in from politicians across Texas and the nation.

  • U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-20): "Today's bipartisan Senate confirmation is a testament to the incredible work Julian has done as Mayor of our hometown of San Antonio. I'm proud of Julian and excited for our country. I'm confident Julian will work tirelessly in his new role making responsible homeownership more accessible, combating homelessness, and strengthening the rise of cities across our country. Congratulations to my brother, our new Secretary of Housing and Urban Development."
  • U.S. Rep. Ruben Hinojosa (TX-15): "Today's confirmation vote by the Senate is a proud moment for our state of Texas, the Latino community, and our entire country.  Mayor Castro will soon become the third Cabinet-level Latino, joining Secretary of Labor Tom Perez and Small Business Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet.  We congratulate Mayor Castro and his family on today's vote and look forward to his swearing-in ceremony as our next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development."
  • U.S. Rep. Pete P. Gallego (D-Alpine): "Today, Julian Castro proves to our nation's youth, Latino and non-Latino alike, that dreams can come true. Congratulations, Mr. Secretary, and best of luck. As my mom would say, ‘Que dios te bendiga.'"
  • State Rep. Mike Villarreal (Dist. 123): "Congratulations to Secretary Castro on this incredible achievement. I know we are all proud to see a native son receive the honor of public service to the nation. Now San Antonio must make sure we do not lose our momentum during this transition."
  • Gilberto Hinojosa, Texas Democratic Party chairman: "Today, a Texas Democrat was confirmed as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. While Mayor of San Antonio, Julián Castro was an advocate for development and opportunity for all. As the only Texan in the Cabinet, we know he'll be a credit to our state and make Texas proud."
