Abbott reaffirms support for paid sick leave bill

Gov. Greg Abbott was in San Antonio on Friday to speak at the North San Antonio Chamber Of Commerce luncheon.

Abbott told chamber members that he still supports a bill that would prevent local governments to require private businesses to offer paid sick leave.

"Paid sick leave is a great business strategy. It's a tool some businesses can use to attract employees, to retain employees and business should be free to use them. But it should be used as a strategic mechanism by businesses at their own discretion. It should not be mandated by government," Abbott said.

The city of San Antonio in August approved an ordinance requiring paid sick leave to be offered to employees.

The ordinance went into effect 2019, but if Senate Bill 15 is passed by lawmakers, the ordinance would be null and void.
