Former President George H.W. Bush, Barbara Bush hospitalized

Mr. Bush has respiratory problem; Mrs. Bush treated for fatigue, cough

HOUSTON – Former first lady Barbara Bush was hospitalized Wednesday morning in Houston, just days after her husband, former President George H.W. Bush, was also hospitalized.

Hospital officials said George H.W. Bush, 92, experienced shortness of breath Saturday and was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital as a precaution.

On Monday, the former president was admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment of a respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia, officials said. The procedure required him to be sedated. He will remain under observation in ICU.

Officials said Barbara Bush, 91, was admitted to the hospital Wednesday morning after experiencing fatigue and coughing.

Jenna Bush Hager, the former president's granddaughter, sent well wishes to him while anchoring the final hour of the Today Show.

"He is really one of the most humble, wonderful men in the world," Hager said.

The former president has a history of health problems. He was hospitalized with bronchitis in 2012 and with pneumonia in 2014. In 2015, he fell at his home in Maine, breaking a bone in his neck.
