KSAT 12's Mark Austin speaks to local lawmakers in Washington

4 South Texas representatives speak in D.C.

SAN ANTONIO – KSAT 12's Mark Austin sat down with Republicans Will Hurd and Lamar Smith as well as Democrats Joaquin Castro and Henry Cueller and asked them what they expect from Donald Trump's inauguration speech and his first 100 days in office. Here's what they had to say:

Rep. Lamar Smith

"I am guessing that the inauguration speech is going to be a little different because President Trump is not a typical politician. I think he is going to emphasize many of the same themes we heard on the campaign trail, appealing directly to the working men an women of  America."

Dem. Joaquin Castro

"I'm hoping that he's going to reach out to Americans of all different backgrounds and political persuasions and try to build a bridge to the Americans that quite honestly, often times he insulted during the campaign, people that were moved and offended by what he had to say but the inauguration will be an opportunity for him to start building that bridge."

Rep. Will Hurd

"I think he should talk about how he's the president for all Americans. I think the first 100 days is going to be pretty busy. We are still going to have to fund the government in the first 100 days. We're looking at a tax plan that's really going to supercharge the economy and we have to deal with the rising premiums when it comes to healthcare."

Dem. Henry Cuellar

"I'm one of the Democrats that want to work with him and give him the benefit of the doubt and see what grounds, what areas we can find a consensus on. I'm not one of those that's going to vote no every time, no. I think like most Americans, I think there's a feeling of unpredictability, a feeling of anxiety you get some of that any time you have a change in leadership from one president to another. But I think most people agree that the 2016 election was unlike anything we've ever seen before and this president, probably unlike anything we've ever seen before. I think he's got no where to go but up, I think he's going to exceed expectations. We've seen that already, he's off to a fast start."
