Prison employee accused of attempting to provide contraband to prisoners

Kitchen supervisor Ray Barr arrested by federal authorities

SAN ANTONIO – A prison employee was arrested for allegedly attempting to provide contraband to an inmate inside of a federal pre-trial detention facility in San Antonio, authorities said.

Ray Barr, a prison employee at the Central Texas Detention Facility -- GEO, was arrested by federal authorities Tuesday afternoon, announced U.S. attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr. and Christopher Combs, Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent in charge, San Antonio division.

Barr, a kitchen supervisor, asked several inmates if they wanted contraband smuggled into GEO in return for money, according to the complaint.

Authorities said Barr agreed to smuggle alcohol and ICE methamphetamine into the facility in exchange for money. Barr was arrested by agents after he accepted payment, but before he could smuggle in the contraband.

Barr was scheduled for an initial appearance Wednesday, authorities said. Barr faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine if convicted.
