Questions surrounding transportation of children crossing dangerous highway answered

First day of bus routes did not go smoothly, spokesperson says

SAN ANTONIO – Confusion surrounding transportation was cleared up Tuesday night at a South San Antonio Independent School District meeting. Children from Zamora Middle School will be guaranteed transportation to avoid a dangerous six-lane highway on their way to school.

A South San ISD spokesperson said plans to bus children who walk across Highway 16 did not go smoothly on the first day of school, but there were fewer issues Tuesday.

South San officials announced late last week that children would be bused across the highway for safety reasons after parents aired concerns about their children having to cross.

On Monday, many parents said their designated bus never arrived and the children were forced to cross the busy highway without a traffic officer. A district spokesperson apologized for the confusion and said the decision to bus the children was made late and not all parents received the necessary information.

“They didn't want the cross guards and the officers out, which we had planned to do for the entirety of the year. And then we changed to include the buses, which is what they were asking,” said Jocelyn Durand, South San ISD spokesperson. “And some people were saying, ‘Why aren't the guards out there?’ And we were saying, ‘Well that's why we provided the buses.’”
