Record spaghetti dinner sales raise $70,000 to help familes of fallen, injured first responders

Nearly 7,000 spaghetti dinner plates sold during 2-day fundraiser

SAN ANTONIO – Two days and more than 20,000 meatballs later -- the 100 Club of San Antonio announced it sold a record-breaking 6,945 spaghetti plates during it's two-day fundraiser benefiting first responders.

Despite raising nearly $70,000 for fallen and injured firefighters and police officers during the event, the group said it was saddened to have lost a member of the policing community and one firefighter in the months leading up to the event.

The event came less than a month after two officers were shot in the line of duty. One officer, Miguel Moreno, died one day after a shootout with a suspect in a car burglary. Moreno's partner, Officer Julio Cavazos, sustained a gunshot wound to the chin and survived.

Before that, the San Antonio Fire Department lost firefighter Scott Deem to a massive fire at the Ingram Square Shopping Center.

The 100 Club of San Antonio stepped in to help the families of Deem, Moreno and Cavazos.

The group said because of record-breaking plate sales, it will also be able to fund the 100 Club Training Scholarship Program which was started last year. The program allows active law-enforcement to obtain additional training in de-escalation skills, defensive tactics and tactical first aid.
