He calls it "San Antonio K-9 unit, first responders."

It features officers and police K-9s and was made using thousands of ceramic tiles.

Perkins said he collected the tiles from all over the city and that the tiny pieces of tile represents everyone in the community and that each piece counts for something.

"Having my studio downtown, here over the years, got me to see people without their uniform,” Perkins said. “Once we don't have our uniforms on, we're all parts of a many-piece puzzle."

Perkins said the time he spent as an artist at Hemisfair Park gave him the idea to use a K-9 in the mosaic.

He said the officers who were there on a daily basis reminded him of equality and order and that they always made an effort to be friendly.
