Program entering second year, opening 2 new centers

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor addressed the teachers and staff of the city-run Pre-K 4 SA program on Monday at their convocation.

The program is entering its second year, with two new centers opening up -- one on the east side and one on the west side.

Taylor said she is hoping the program continues to be a success but admits the city won't know the true success for a few more years.

"They're looking forward to some years from now, once these kids are actually in elementary school, getting the data back on the testing," she said. "So what I think is going to happen is that they've had better preparation for kindergarten and first grade and so we think that they'll be able to be more successful academically."

The program was initiated by former Mayor Julian Castro and was approved by the voters in 2012.
