SA voters react to Wendy Davis' run for Texas governor

Views differ on Davis' chances

SAN ANTONIO – The expected announcement by State Sen. Wendy Davis, of Fort Worth, that she's running for governor has San Antonio voters talking.

"Well, it's about time we have a woman. It's all men, men, men," said Emma Garcia.

If elected, the Democratic lawmaker would be the state's first woman governor since Ann Richards, who was elected in 1990.

But Garcia said she has her doubts Davis will be able to defeat Republicans Tom Pauken of Houston or Attorney General Greg Abbott, who are running in the March primary.

Robert Stovall, Bexar County GOP chair, said he's not surprised Davis wants to be governor.

"It's because she can't win re-election in her home district," Stovall said.

Yet a local business owner said Davis should go for it.

"I'm a conservative myself, but I think there has to be a change," said Al Reynosa.

Mayor Julian Castro said voters will find Davis a compelling candidate in person.

"She has a strong record of accomplishment, intelligent, charismatic," Castro said. "She has an ability to work with people on both sides of the aisle."
