SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio woman spent her Christmas Eve giving out gifts to children.
Mary Ortega started the Angel Mary Toy Drive 22 years ago. She and other volunteers go through the streets of the city’s east and west sides, making multiple stops to provide children with toys, fruit and candy to children for Christmas.
Any children in the area were able to get gifts and have their pictures taken with Santa.
Ortega said the annual event has grown through the years since she started it.
“I started out with a couple of families and before I knew it, it grew and grew. Then we started doing it in the streets,” she said.
Ortega said the event has grown so popular that now people know to wait up for them.
