SAFD kicks off 'Fill the Boot' campaign

Fundraiser benefits Muscular Dystrophy Association

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department on Wednesday kicked off its "Fill the Boot" campaign that benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Campaign organizers hope to raise $200,000, which is close to what they raised in 2016.

For SAFD Capt. Scott Hicks, the fundraiser is personal to him. His son was diagnosed with a type of muscular dystrophy.

"Obviously, for the people that I knew in the department, it became way more personal as well, and it gave us a little extra motivation," Hicks said. "Then come to find out we are one of three, there are two other firefighters in the department who have children with muscular dystrophy as well."

SAFD was ranked among the top three fire departments in the state for total dollars raised in 2016.
