Fire officials said the agency earned the recognition for achieving 75 percent or higher adherence for 24 months on all Mission: Lifeline EMS quality measures to improve the quality of care for heart attack patients.

SAFD's Mobile Integrated Healthcare was the recipient of the State of Texas Health and Human Services Commissioners Award of Excellence, an award given to community partners who have gone to extraordinary lengths to protect and serve the unprotected.

This is the first time an outside agency received the award, fire officials said.

"What these paramedics do, instead of taking patients to the hospital, their goal is to keep them out of the hospital," said SAFD Medical Director Dr. David Miramontes. "So, it's a very unique role for our firefighter paramedics."

MIH is reducing high volume 911 callers by an average of 60 percent, Miramontes said.
