SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio cabinet manufacturer reportedly shut down Monday morning without notifying many of its 900 employees.
Cardell Cabinetry located near Interstate 35 and AT&T Center Parkway has been in business for nearly four decades.

According to a lawyer who spoke to the San Antonio Express-News, Cardell Cabinetry is closing because of the housing slump of recent years as well as a $45 million debt.
The company was not expected to file for bankruptcy. Last month, KSAT reported Cardell Cabinetry was cited for a number of safety violations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The company was ordered to pay more than a $250,000 in fines. Nearly 900 employees work for the company and many say they were unaware of the closure.
At least 150 employees showed up for work Monday only to find guards at the front gate.
Most say they were not told anything by management although some say they had heard rumors.
Some employees tell KSAT they have been working at the company between 12 to 15 years and no one told them to do anything different Monday morning.
Security chased many workers away and ordered everyone to stand behind cones off property.
San Antonio police arrived just after 7 a.m. to clear traffic and cars that lined the Interstate 35 access road outside the plant.
As of 7 a.m. Monday, KSAT had not received an official statement on the closure from the company.
