San Antonio Police Department honors fallen officers

Memorial service honors 54 SAPD officers

The San Antonio Police Department held a memorial service Friday to remember 54 officers killed in the line of duty.

Dozens of SAPD officers, friends and relatives gathered at the SAPD Training Academy to pay tribute to the fallen officers.

Among those in attendance was Denise Deckard, the widow of Officer Robert Deckard, who was killed Dec. 13 during a chase of armed robbery suspects.

Denise Deckard added the 54th ribbon to a flag honoring the fallen officers.

Giving the keynote address were Grace Lopez and Renee Lopez, the widow and daughter of Officer Val Lopez, who died in 2006.

The women described the close relationships police officers have with one another and how they step up to comfort families during their darkest hours.

"Everywhere we turned ... there were so many of you," Renee Lopez told the crowd.

"Police Memorial Week is a time to honor, to remember, to mourn, to love and even laugh about the good times we had with our brave heroes," Grace Lopez said.

Other family members said it hurts to see that the number of fallen officers continues to grow.
