The story of Ben the Beagle, the stray dog from San Antonio who was adopted by President Donald Trump’s family, has gotten national attention.

Ben was picked up by Animal Care Services in April 2016. He was covered in severe mange and needed immediate health care.

Ben spent nearly a month recovering from his injuries at the Callaghan Vet Hospital. The group, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, was notified of Ben’s situation and contacted ACS.

Shelters require a two-week quarantine before a dog can be transported out of state. In Ben’s case, he was not medically ready to leave the shelter due to his injuries so he stayed a bit longer in San Antonio.

Once he was medically evaluated, Rescue Dogs Rock picked him up from ACS a few days later and took Ben to New York.

The group then connected Ben to Trump’s son, Eric Trump, and his wife, Lara Trump.

The couple fostered Ben and decided to keep him. He’s now a happy and healthy dog and has quite a story to tell.

ACS tells KSAT it takes in an estimated 30,000 animals each year and is always in need of foster families.

Last October, KSAT reported on almost 70 dogs that were seized from two animal cruelty cases.

Several of the dogs were adopted and sent to rescue groups.

Another of ACS’ success stories was Millie, the yellow Labrador retriever who was abandoned and found in a West Side dumpster in April 2016.

Millie was taken in by Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption and looked healthy in a Facebook video posted a month later.

Anyone who would like to help can call ACS at 210-207-4PET or click here for a foster application.
