The zoo said howler monkeys are found in the rain forests of Central and South America and are known for their loud, guttural territorial howls and growls.

Sophie will have a lot on her hands in the coming months, as the zoo said young howler monkeys cling to their mothers for up to a year after birth.

The species is not endangered, but the zoo said it is threatened by habitat destruction.

Visitors are welcome to see the new arrival in the zoo's Amazonia section.
