Funeral arrangements for SAPD detective who died battling leukemia announced

SAN ANTONIO – Detective Roland Perez, of the San Antonio Police Department, died late Sunday after battling a chronic form of leukemia for several months.

Perez was a husband, a father and a 21-year veteran of the force. He was diagnosed with myelodysplastic in October 2017.

Myelodysplastic is a blood cancer that the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center describes as "a group of cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature or become healthy blood cells."

STBTC hosted a bone marrow drive last year with the hope of finding a bone marrow donor for Perez. There, he told KSAT that he was happy that the drive could also potentially find someone else a bone marrow donor, if not him.

“There are other people that need bone marrow, so hopefully this will help someone else,” he said in November.

Before his death, Perez participated in a ceremonial final roll call at the Prue Substation where he was assigned.
