SAPD gets financial help in East Side crime fight

San Antonio Housing Authority sharing $50,000 grant

SAN ANTONIO – In hopes of ending the recent spike in crime on the city’s East Side, the San Antonio Housing Authority is sharing a $50,000 grant with the San Antonio Police Department.

When asked about the grant, police Chief William McManus said, “We need as many resources and friends as we can get in order to do what we need to do best.”

The chief said that community engagement will be one way in which the money will be spent.

“It’s also going to go into some additional patrols,” McManus said. “We’ll use it as an overtime addition to the areas over there that are experiencing high amounts of crime right now.”

Mayor Ivy Taylor too applauded the agreement. She called it an extension of the city’s partnership with SAHA.

“It hasn’t been just focused on housing,” Taylor said. “It’s also been focused on reducing crime in that area and today was an example of that partnership.”
