A man has barricaded himself inside his apartment and is now involved in a standoff with San Antonio police on the city's West Side, San Antonio police said.

The incident was reported just after 4 a.m. in the 2000 block of South Zarzamora, found not far from Highway 90 and Frio City Road.

Police said a woman told them she was spending the night with a friend and woke to find a man beating and choking her friend. The visiting woman ran out of the apartment and called 911, police said.

SAPD said they believe the man is either a boyfriend or ex and is currently in possession of a gun.

Police arrived within minutes and tried to contact the people inside. Officers said originally they could hear them moving but would not answer. At one point the man stepped out of the apartment through a back door and the woman he was holding escaped, police said.

Police believe the man is still inside and said that they are trying to talk to him by phone and by loud speaker.

The woman who escaped was checked out by paramedics but did not have any serious injuries, police said. Neighbors in the building were evacuated earlier in the morning.

Storm Elementary of SAISD is not far from the scene. San Antonio Independent School District spokeswoman Leslie Price said the school is open for students but that the school is in a lockout situation, meaning only students and staff are allowed in. There may be some delays for buses carrying middle and high students in this area because of blocked streets, Price said.
