Man hits cars, runs through glass window while attempting to escape from police

Suspect accused of trying to steal license plate on NW Side

SAN ANTONIO – A witness to a wild pursuit on the Northwest Side said he's glad no one was killed Friday.

The owner of a BMW that was one of five cars hit in the pursuit was grabbing food along Bluemel Road near Wurzbach Road when it happened.

"We saw a car just race out of the parking lot and hit another car, and initially we weren't sure if our car was hit or not," said Hussain Thaver as he waited for police to allow him to get his car.

"The parking lot looks like bumper cars were being played in there," San Antonio Police Chief McManus said at the scene.

Police got a call for someone who was stealing license plates at the strip mall about 4 p.m.

An officer found a man in a Chevy Tahoe with paper plates. Police believe the SUV was stolen and that the driver was on drugs.

"It appeared he was very, very high on something," McManus said.

Police said the suspect backed straight into a police cruiser, which made the front of the cruiser spin. He then tried to hit the officer's car again.

"That officer, who was being rammed, his life was in danger," McManus said.

A second officer, who has been with the Police Department for seven years, shot at the suspect five times.

None of the rounds she fired hit the driver. The driver eventually crashed on Bluemel Road. He then ran into the home of a woman who was inside cooking dinner and jumped through a plate glass window.

"It was a desperate attempt to escape and disregard anybody else's safety," McManus said.

McManus said the officer had injuries to his lower body from the crash but is doing OK. The suspect was taken to University Hospital after being cut by glass.
