SAPD: Man shot to death during confrontation with ex-girlfriend

Gunshots exchanged at home on Sterling Drive

SAN ANTONIO – A fight between a woman's boyfriend and her ex-boyfriend ended with one of the men dead, San Antonio police say.

SAPD investigators said the 56-year-old ex-boyfriend went to his ex-girlfriend's East Side home in the 800 block of Sterling and confronted her just before 10 p.m. Monday.

The woman's current boyfriend, 68-year-old Danny Smith, then came outside and got into a fight with the ex-boyfriend, police said.

The ex-boyfriend got a shotgun and fired at the home, but didn't hit anyone.

"The male at the location also brandished a shotgun and fired a shot at the suspect, striking him," said San Antonio police Officer Doug Greene.

The wounded man stumbled back into his truck, and put the pickup in reverse, but only drove a few houses down before he crashed into a trashcan.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the 56-year-old dead a short time later.

Several people were taken to police headquarters for questioning, including the woman and Smith. Police said it appears Smith will not face charges.

"The suspect was the one who initiated the use of deadly force, showing that possibly the victim, in this case, was defending himself," Greene said.
