SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Water System is celebrating a new source of water for the city and customers.

Officials with SAWS, the city of Seguin and the city of Schertz cut the ribbon on a new pipeline that will bring water from Gonzales County to San Antonio.

In a deal that is 10 years in the making, SAWS is paying the two cities for the use of an existing pipeline.

The pipeline will now provide billions of gallons of water to SAWS customers.

"It means we don't have to spend as much money on a pipeline as we otherwise would. The cities of Schertz and Segiuin will benefit from our revenue of paying for capacity in that pipeline," said SAWS President & CEO Robert Puente.

SAWS said the deal will save ratepayers more than $88 million and help San Antonio handle water demands during an ongoing drought.
