SAWS cuts off water to mobile homes

SAWS: Park owner owes $10,000

SAN ANTONIO – Residents of a Northeast side mobile home park were preparing to spend a third day without water.

The San Antonio Water System turned off the water supply to the Plaza Mobile Home Park Tuesday morning because they said the park's owner hasn't paid the water bill in nearly a year.

SAWS said the owner of the property owes them thousands of dollars.

"We have no way to take a shower. We have no way to wash our hair. We can't flush our toilets and we can't wash our dishes," said Jeanie Spring a resident at the mobile home park. "We pay our bills and we expect to have water."

A SAWS spokeswoman said the utility cut off the water supply because the owner of the property owes roughly $10,000.

Residents are frustrated because they make monthly payments to the park manager who then gives the money to the owner to pay the bill.

"I got receipts to show I paid my water, you know and so does everybody else," said resident Rebecca Mike. "We get receipts for it, so why are we doing without?"

Rebecca Mike said this is the second time the water has been cut off by SAWS for non-payment.

She said last March, the residents went a week without water until another resident paid thousands of dollars out of his own pocket to pay the bill and get the service restored.

Residents said whatever is going on, it's not fair and they expect the owner to take care of his responsibilities just like he expects them to.

"We pay our rent. If we don't pay on time they want to cut us off," Spring said. "All we want is our water back on."

SAWS said it will restore the water to the mobile home park residents when the owner contacts them and sets up a payment plan. Until then, no water.

Attempts to contact the owner of the property to get his side of the story were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, his residents are spending money on bottled water and relying on friends and family to take showers.

"I want to see the water back on ASAP," said Mike. "I think he (park owner) needs to at least make an appearance or an attempt to try and pay something and get this water back on for his tenants here."
